Adverbdannelse og komparasjon

[Adverb Formation and Comparison]

1. Adjective vs. Adverb Distinction

An adjective describes a noun (what something IS like). An adverb modifies a verb (HOW an action is done), an adjective, or another adverb:

Function
Adjektiv (beskriver substantiv)(Adjective (modifies noun))
Construction
Adjektiv + Substantiv(Adjective + Noun)
Example (with translation)
Han har en pen bil.(He has a nice car.)
Function
Adverb (beskriver verb)(Adverb (modifies verb))
Construction
Verb + Adverb (-t)(Verb + Adverb (-t))
Example (with translation)
Hun synger veldig pent.(She sings very beautifully.)
Function
Adverb (grad foran adjektiv)(Degree Adverb (before adjective))
Construction
Adverb + Adjektiv(Adverb + Adjective)
Example (with translation)
Oppgaven var utrolig lett.(The task was incredibly easy.)
Examples:
Huset er pent. (adjektiv som beskriver 'huset')The house is nice. (adjective describing the noun 'house')
Hun skriver pent. (adverb som beskriver verbet 'skriver')She writes neatly. (adverb modifying the verb 'writes')
Husene er pene. / De synger pent. (Merk: adjektivet bøyes til -e i flertall, men adverbet har alltid -t!)The houses are pretty (pene) / They sing nicely (pent). (Adjective takes -e in plural, but the adverb strictly stays -t!)
Common mistakes: 1) For people: 'Jeg er ikke sikker' (adjective without -t, NOT 'sikkert'). 2) Neuter: 'Det er sikkert sant' (adjective with -t, NOT 'sikker'). 3) Modifying verbs: 'Vi snakker godt norsk' (adverb with -t, NOT 'god'). 4) Plural: 'Oppgavene var vanskelige' (adjective with -e, NOT 'vanskelig').

2. Adverb Comparison Degrees

Many manner and time adverbs take -ere and -est, or use suppletive irregular stems:

Positive (with translation)
pent(beautifully)
Comparative
penere(more beautifully)
Superlative
penest(most beautifully)
Positive (with translation)
raskt / fort(quickly / fast)
Comparative
raskere / fortere(faster / more quickly)
Superlative
raskest / fortest(fastest / most quickly)
Positive (with translation)
godt / bra(well)
Comparative
bedre(better)
Superlative
best(best)
Positive (with translation)
dårlig / ille(badly)
Comparative
verre(worse)
Superlative
verst(worst)
Positive (with translation)
mye(much)
Comparative
mer(more)
Superlative
mest(most)
Positive (with translation)
lite(little)
Comparative
mindre(less)
Superlative
minst(least)
Positive (with translation)
ofte(often)
Comparative
oftere(more often)
Superlative
oftest(most often)
Positive (with translation)
lenge (om tid)(for a long time)
Comparative
lenger(longer)
Superlative
lengst(longest)

3. 'Lenger' (Adverb) vs. 'Lengre' (Adjective)

'Lenger' is an adverb of time and distance (longer time, further). 'Lengre' is the comparative form of the adjective 'lang' modifying a noun (longer physical object):

Examples:
Jeg kan ikke vente lenger. (adverb: tid)I cannot wait any longer. (adverb of time)
Vi kjørte lenger enn planlagt. (adverb: avstand)We drove further than planned. (adverb of distance)
Han skrev en lengre rapport enn meg. (adjektiv: beskriver 'rapport')He wrote a longer report than me. (adjective modifying 'report')
Rule of thumb: use 'lengre' when modifying a noun directly (e.g. 'a longer pause'). Use 'lenger' when modifying a verb (e.g. 'wait longer', 'walk further').
