2. Syntactic Placement and Positional Flexibility

Generally, modal adverbs function as sentence adverbials (after finite verb in main clauses, before verb in subordinate clauses). However, several modal adverbs enjoy unique syntactic mobility:

Standard placement (mid-position in main clauses and S-S-V in subordinate):

Helsetning: Han er nok sliten etter turen. (etter verbet)Main clause: He is probably tired after the trip.
Leddsetning: Jeg tror at han nok er sliten. (foran verbet)Subordinate clause: I think that he probably is tired.

Flexible placement: Initial, mid-position, or end-position (faktisk, muligens):

Certain modal adverbs can occupy three distinct positions to shift pragmatic focus:

1. Først i setningen (krever V2): «Faktisk kommer hun på festen.» / «Muligens reiser vi i juni.»1. Sentence-initial (with V2 inversion): 'Faktisk kommer hun...'
2. Midtstilt som vanlig setningsadverbial: «Hun kommer faktisk på festen.» / «Vi reiser muligens i juni.»2. Mid-position (standard sentence adverbial): 'Hun kommer faktisk...'
3. Til slutt med komma (for ettertanke): «Hun kommer på festen, faktisk.» / «Vi reiser i juni, muligens.»3. End-position with a comma (as an afterthought): 'Hun kommer på festen, faktisk.'
Note: Particles like 'jo', 'nok', and 'vel' CANNOT stand in initial position alone — they strictly require mid-position after the finite verb.
