Setningsadverb og deres plassering
[Sentence Adverbials and Word Order]Sentence adverbials modify the entire clause and follow strict structural rules: after the finite verb in main clauses, and before the verb in subordinate clauses. Based on syntactic mobility, they divide into 4 distinct groups: fixed mid-position only, initial/mid, end/mid, and fully flexible.
1. What is a Sentence Adverbial and the Golden Placement Rule
Sentence adverbials are a specialized class of adverbs that modify the proposition as a whole. The most frequent sentence adverbial is 'ikke' (not). Once you master placing 'ikke', you instantly know where all other sentence adverbials belong! The core rule is strict and straightforward:
| Clause Type | Adverbial Position | Formula / Rule | Example with 'ikke' |
|---|---|---|---|
Helsetning (hovedsetning)Main clause | ETTER det bøyde verbet (V1)AFTER the finite verb (V1) | Subjekt + VERB + SetningsadverbSubject + VERB + Adverbial | Jeg har IKKE vasket håret i dag.I have NOT washed my hair today. |
Leddsetning (underordnet)Subordinate clause | FORAN det bøyde verbet (V1)BEFORE the finite verb (V1) | Subjunksjon + Subjekt + Setningsadverb + VERB (S-S-V)Subjunction + Subject + Adverbial + VERB (S-S-V) | ...fordi jeg IKKE har vasket håret i dag....because I have NOT washed my hair today. |
2. Group 1: Adverbials Restricted to Fixed Mid-Position
These words have a strictly locked position. They can NEVER open a main clause nor stand at the very end. They appear solely after the verb in main clauses and before the verb in subclauses:
| Adverbial | Meaning | In Main Clause (after V1) | In Subordinate Clause (before V1) |
|---|---|---|---|
ikke | ikke (nektelse)not (negation) | Jeg har IKKE vasket håret i dag.I have not washed my hair today. | Jeg vil ikke gå ut fordi jeg IKKE har vasket håret i dag.I don't want to go out because I haven't washed my hair today. |
gjerne | gjerne (med glede / vil helst)gladly / would like to | Han vil GJERNE hjelpe deg.He would gladly help you. | Han sier at han GJERNE vil hjelpe deg.He says that he would gladly help you. |

3. Groups 2 & 3: Adverbials Permitted Initially or Finally
Certain sentence adverbials enjoy positional flexibility. Note that when an adverbial fronts into position 1, it strictly triggers V2 inversion (verb on position 2 before subject):
Group 2: Permitted in Mid-Position OR Clause-Initial (dessverre, heldigvis, fremdeles)
| Adverbial | Mid-Position in Main | Clause-Initial (V2) | In Subordinate Clause |
|---|---|---|---|
dessverre | Jeg kan DESSVERRE ikke hjelpe deg.I unfortunately cannot help you. | DESSVERRE KAN JEG ikke hjelpe deg.Unfortunately, I cannot help you. | Han sa at han DESSVERRE ikke kunne hjelpe meg.He said that he unfortunately could not help me. |

Group 3: Permitted in Mid-Position OR Clause-Final (ofte, også, heller)
| Adverbial | Mid-Position in Main | End-Position in Main | In Subordinate Clause |
|---|---|---|---|
ofte | De spiller OFTE fotball. They often play football. | De spiller fotball OFTE.They play football often. | De spurte om vi OFTE spiller fotball. They asked if we often play football. |

heller (med nektelse) | Jeg liker HELLER ikke fisk.I don't like fish either. | Jeg liker ikke fisk HELLER.I don't like fish either. | Hun sier at hun HELLER ikke liker fisk. She says that she doesn't like fish either. |
4. Group 4: Maximum Mobility – Mid, Initial, or Final
Three high-frequency adverbials enjoy full positional versatility in main clauses: standard mid-position, sentence-initial (triggering V2), or sentence-final:
| Adverbial | Mid-Position | Clause-Initial (V2) | End-Position | In Subordinate (S-S-V) |
