Konjunksjoner (og, men, for, så, eller)

[Coordinating Conjunctions (og, men, for, så, eller)]

1. The 5 Core Coordinating Conjunctions

Coordinating conjunctions connect equivalent elements without altering the word order in the succeeding clause. Notice that 'for' denotes cause, whereas 'så' expresses consequence:

Conjunction
og(og (and))
Function
Legger til mer informasjon (tillegg)(Adds information)
Example (with translation)
Jeg er glad i deg, og du er glad i meg.(I love you, and you love me.)
Logical Direction
Tillegg (+)(Addition (+))
Conjunction
men(men (but))
Function
Viser en motsetning eller kontrast(Contrast / opposition)
Example (with translation)
Jeg kan litt norsk, men jeg lærer nye ord hver dag.(I know some Norwegian, but I learn new words every day.)
Logical Direction
Motsetning (↔)(Contrast (↔))
Conjunction
eller(eller (or))
Function
Viser et valg eller alternativ(Choice or alternative)
Example (with translation)
Vil du ha kaffe, eller vil du ha te?(Do you want coffee, or do you want tea?)
Logical Direction
Valg (A / B)(Alternative (A / B))
Conjunction
for(for (for / because))
Function
Forteller ÅRSAKEN (hvorfor noe skjer)(States the CAUSE (why it happens))
Example (with translation)
Jeg vil reise til Syden, for jeg liker ikke regnet.(I want to travel south, for I don't like rain.)
Logical Direction
Handling ➡️ Årsak(Action ➡️ Cause)
Conjunction
så(så (so / therefore))
Function
Viser KONSEKVENSEN (hva det fører til)(Shows the CONSEQUENCE / RESULT)
Example (with translation)
Jeg liker ikke regnet, så jeg vil reise til Syden.(I don't like rain, so I want to travel south.)
Logical Direction
Årsak ➡️ Konsekvens(Cause ➡️ Consequence)
Compare 'for' and 'så': they express the same logical relation in inverted directions: 'Action + FOR + cause' vs. 'Cause + SÅ + consequence'. Note also: 'for' introduces a main clause ('for han vil ikke...'), whereas 'fordi' introduces a subclause ('fordi han ikke vil...').

2. Three Golden Rules and Comma Usage

There are three essential syntactic rules to observe when using coordinating conjunctions:

Examples:
1. Komma foran helsetning: Vi setter alltid komma foran konjunksjonen hvis den etterfølges av en full helsetning (subjekt + verbal): «Jeg liker vinteren, men jeg liker ikke å gå på ski.»1. Comma before full main clauses: Always place a comma before the conjunction when followed by an independent clause with both subject and verb.
2. Alltid tegn foran 'men': Foran 'men' må vi ALLTID ha komma eller punktum: «Jeg kan litt norsk, men jeg lærer nye ord hver dag.»2. Punctuation before 'men': Always use a comma or period before 'men'.
3. Konjunksjonen påvirker IKKE ordstillingen: Konjunksjonen står på 'plass 0' og forandrer ikke V2-regelen i helsetningen: «[1: Jeg] [2: liker] [3: ikke] å gå på ski.»3. Conjunction does NOT disrupt word order: The conjunction occupies 'position 0' and leaves the main clause V2 structure intact.

3. Correlative Conjunctions (både-og, enten-eller, verken-eller)

Correlative paired conjunctions link two alternatives with syntactic precision:

Correlative Pair
både ... og(både ... og (both ... and))
Meaning
Inkluderer begge alternativer(Includes both alternatives)
Example (with translation)
Jeg liker BÅDE Spania OG Italia veldig godt.(I like both Spain and Italy very much.)
Function
A + B (Begge deler)(A + B (Both))
Correlative Pair
enten ... eller(enten ... eller (either ... or))
Meaning
Valg når vi ikke har bestemt oss(Choice between alternatives)
Example (with translation)
Jeg reiser ENTEN i morgen ELLER dagen etter.(I will travel either tomorrow or the day after.)
Function
A eller B (Ett valg)(A or B (One choice))
Correlative Pair
verken ... eller(verken ... eller (neither ... nor))
Meaning
Velger bort alle alternativene (dobbelt nei)(Excludes all options)
Example (with translation)
Jeg har VERKEN lyst på kjøtt ELLER fisk.(I want neither meat nor fish.)
Function
Ikke A og ikke B(Neither A nor B)

4. What Elements Do Conjunctions Connect?

Conjunctions do not merely join whole clauses; they coordinate any two grammatically identical words or constituents:

Part of Speech / Structure
Substantiver(Nouns)
Example (with translation)
Jeg liker sjokolade OG vanilje.(I like chocolate and vanilla.)
Part of Speech / Structure
Adjektiver(Adjectives)
Example (with translation)
Er han sympatisk ELLER falsk?(Is he sympathetic or fake?)
Part of Speech / Structure
Verb(Verbs)
Example (with translation)
Hun skrattet OG lo.(She chuckled and laughed.)
Part of Speech / Structure
Adverb(Adverbs)
Example (with translation)
Eksamenskandidaten var nervøs, MEN fokusert.(The candidate was nervous, but focused.)
Part of Speech / Structure
Preposisjoner(Prepositions)
Example (with translation)
Satt du bak ELLER foran Lise?(Did you sit behind or in front of Lise?)
Part of Speech / Structure
Pronomen(Pronouns)
Example (with translation)
Er du forelsket i henne ELLER meg?(Are you in love with her or me?)
Part of Speech / Structure
Interjeksjoner(Interjections)
Example (with translation)
Hva tenker du? Ja ELLER nei?(What do you think? Yes or no?)
Part of Speech / Structure
Helsetninger(Main Clauses)
Example (with translation)
Per fikk 5 på prøven, MEN det var han ikke fornøyd med.(Per got a 5 on the test, but he was not satisfied with that.)
Part of Speech / Structure
Leddsetninger(Subordinate Clauses)
Example (with translation)
Vi kan droppe planene hvis du ikke kan, ELLER hvis du ikke vil.(We can drop our plans if you can't, or if you don't want to.)

5. Common Mistake: Placing 'ikke' After Conjunctions

When a coordinator links two main clauses, the second clause remains an INDEPENDENT main clause. Therefore, the negation 'ikke' MUST follow the verb:

Examples:
Feil«Han spiser fisk, men han ikke spiser sushi.» 🛑
WRONG: You cannot place 'ikke' before the verb in an independent clause!
Riktig«Han spiser fisk, men han spiser IKKE sushi.» ✅
Verb in position 2, followed by 'ikke': han [1] spiser [2] IKKE [3] sushi.

6. The Word 'så': Three Grammatical Families (Adverb vs. Conjunction vs. Subjunction)

The word 'så' can mean three completely different things in Norwegian across three separate word classes. Identifying which family it belongs to is essential because each family dictates a distinct clause structure:

Word Class of 'så'
1. Adverb(1. Adverb)
Meaning / Synonym
etterpå / deretter (tid / kronologi)(afterwards / then (chronology))
Syntactic Rule
V2-regelen! 'Så' står i forfeltet [1] og krever verbet på plass 2 [2] foran subjektet [3] (inversjon).(V2 Rule! 'Så' opens position 1 [1] and requires the verb on position 2 [2] before subject [3] (inversion).)
Example Sentence
Først sover jeg, SÅ DUSJER JEG, SÅ GÅR JEG på fest.(First I sleep, then I take a shower, then I go to a party.)
Word Class of 'så'
2. Konjunksjon(2. Coordinating Conjunction)
Meaning / Synonym
derfor / følgelig (konsekvens / årsak-virkning)(therefore / so (consequence / result))
Syntactic Rule
Helsetningsordstilling! 'Så' står på plass 0: Subjekt [1] + Verb [2] + 'ikke' [3] (etter verbet).(Main clause order! 'Så' at pos 0: Subject [1] + Verb [2] + 'ikke' [3] (after verb).)
Example Sentence
Jeg er sliten etter festen, SÅ JEG SKAL IKKE sove. / Jeg har ikke tid i dag, SÅ VI MÅ heller ta møtet i morgen.(I am tired after the party, so I will not sleep. / I don't have time today, so we should rather meet tomorrow.)
Word Class of 'så'
3. Subjunksjon(3. Subordinating Conjunction)
Meaning / Synonym
slik at / sånn at / for at (hensikt / formål)(so that / in order that (purpose))
Syntactic Rule
Leddsetningsordstilling! S-S-V: Subjunksjon ('så') + Subjekt + 'ikke' FORAN verbet!(Subordinate clause order! S-S-V: Subjunction ('så') + Subject + 'ikke' BEFORE the verb!)
Example Sentence
Jeg må løpe nå SÅ JEG IKKE MISTER bussen. / Kan vi begynne møtet nå SÅ VI BLIR ferdig før henting?(I must run now so that I don't miss the bus. / Can we start the meeting now so that we finish before pickup?)
Crucial difference between coordinator and subordinator: • Coordinator (therefore): '...så jeg SKAL IKKE sove.' ('ikke' after the verb) • Subordinator (so that): '...så jeg IKKE MISTER bussen.' ('ikke' before the verb)
