Kommaregler på norsk

[Norwegian Comma Rules]

1. The 3 Primary Comma Rules

Rule
1. Mellom to helsetninger(1. Between main clauses)
Explanation
Komma foran og, men, for, så, eller(Comma before coordinating conjunctions)
Example (with translation)
Jonas liker kaffe, MEN Sofia foretrekker te.(Jonas likes coffee, BUT Sofia prefers tea.)
Rule
2. Etter foranstilt leddsetning(2. After fronted sub-clause)
Explanation
Komma når leddsetningen står foran hovedsetningen(Always comma when sub-clause precedes main)
Example (with translation)
Når det snør ute, KOSER vi oss inne.(When it snows outside, we stay cozy indoors.)
Rule
3. Ved oppramsing(3. In list enumerations)
Explanation
Komma mellom leddene, men IKKE foran 'og'(Comma between items, but NO Oxford comma before 'og')
Example (with translation)
Jeg kjøpte brød, melk, ost og kaffe.(I bought bread, milk, cheese, and coffee.)
Key distinction from other languages: In standard Norwegian, do NOT put a comma before 'at' (that) or 'fordi' (because) when the sub-clause comes at the end: 'Jeg vet at du har rett' (no comma!).
