[Continuous Aspect, Habits & Modal Expressions]Norwegian has no dedicated '-ing' continuous tense. Learn how to express actions in progress ('sitte og prate', 'holde på og jobber', 'være i ferd med å'), habitual actions ('pleier å'), near-miss events ('skulle til å'), and modal usages of 'få'.
1. Habitual Actions: 'å pleie å + infinitive'
We use 'å pleie å' to express habitual behavior (equivalent to 'usually' or 'used to'):
Examples:
Jeg pleier å drikke en kopp kaffe før jeg starter arbeidsdagen.I usually drink a cup of coffee before starting the workday.
Jeg pleide å sykle mye da jeg var yngre. (fortidsvane)I used to cycle a lot when I was younger.
2. Continuous Actions in Progress (Progressive Aspect)
Norwegian lacks an '-ing' form. To emphasize that an action is ongoing right now, dedicated constructions are used:
A. Posture verbs (sitte / stå / ligge / drive) + OG + verb:
Both verbs are in the SAME grammatical tense:
De satt og pratet i timesvis. (sitte og + verb)They sat chatting for hours.
Vi sto og ventet i en halv time før de endelig kom. (stå og + verb)We stood waiting for half an hour before they finally arrived.
Katten ligger og venter på byttet. (ligge og + verb)The cat is lying down waiting for its prey.
De drev og reparerte den gamle bilen i mange år. (drive og + verb)They spent years tinkering with and fixing the old car.
B. 'Å holde på og', 'være i ferd med å', and 'være i gang med':
Jeg holder på og jobber med presentasjonen til møtet.I am in the middle of working on the presentation for the meeting.
Planten er i ferd med å falle ned fra vinduskarmen. Sett den på plass! The plant is on the verge of falling off the windowsill. Put it back!
Vi er i gang med å lage kaken til bursdagen hans.We are underway with baking the cake for his birthday.
3. Near-Miss Events: 'holde på å' and 'skulle til å'
When an event almost took place or was interrupted just before beginning:
Examples:
Jeg holdt på å si at du skulle gjøre det. (nesten sa det)I was about to say that you should do it.
Oi, jeg holdt på å falle på isen!Whoa, I almost slipped and fell on the ice!
Vi skulle til å dra på tur, men siden du kom kan vi godt bli hjemme. We were just about to head out, but since you arrived, we'd gladly stay home.
