[Countable and Uncountable Nouns]

1. Core Distinction and Article Usage

Only countable nouns have plural forms. Uncountable nouns lack plurals and typically appear without an article in indefinite contexts:

Category
Væsker og drikke(Liquids and beverages)
Indefinite (No Article)
melk, vann, te, kaffe, olje(milk, water, tea, coffee, oil)
Definite (Has Gender!)
melka / melken, vannet, kaffen(the milk, the water, the coffee)
Example (with translation)
Jeg drikker melk hver dag. Den kalde melka smakte godt.(I drink milk every day. The cold milk tasted great.)
Category
Stoffer og råmaterialer(Substances and materials)
Indefinite (No Article)
gull, sølv, luft, ull, ris, pasta(gold, silver, air, wool, rice, pasta)
Definite (Has Gender!)
gullet, lufta / luften, ulla(the gold, the air, the wool)
Example (with translation)
Ringen er laget av rent gull.(The ring is made of pure gold.)
Category
Abstrakte begreper(Abstract concepts)
Indefinite (No Article)
kjærlighet, hat, kompetanse, tid(love, hate, competence, time)
Definite (Has Gender!)
kjærligheten, kompetansen, tida(the love, the competence, the time)
Example (with translation)
Vi trenger mer kompetanse og informasjon.(We need more expertise and information.)
Category
Samlebegreper (fellesnavn)(Collective concepts)
Indefinite (No Article)
utstyr, bagasje, mat, trafikk(equipment, luggage, food, traffic)
Definite (Has Gender!)
utstyret, bagasjen, maten(the equipment, the luggage, the food)
Example (with translation)
Har du pakket alt nødvendig utstyr?(Have you packed all necessary gear?)
Classic mistake: Do not place an indefinite article before uncountable nouns: 'Jeg drikker en melk' ❌ → 'Jeg drikker melk' ✅. However, they retain grammatical gender: ei melk → melka.

2. Dual Role: Both Countable and Uncountable

Several nouns function as either uncountable or countable depending on context:

A. Types, varieties, and servings:

Jeg drikker vin til middag. (utellelig væske)I drink wine for dinner (uncountable liquid).
Restauranten har mange gode viner fra Italia. (tellelig: ulike typer/merker)The restaurant has many fine wines from Italy (countable: varieties).
Kan vi få to kaffer og en te? (tellelig: to kopper kaffe)Can we have two coffees and a tea? (countable: cups of coffee).

B. General mass vs. distinct individual units:

Det er mye skog i Norge. (utellelig landskapsmasse)There is a lot of forest in Norway (uncountable mass).
Det finnes noen få skoger i nærheten av byen. (tellelig: avgrensede skogområder)There are a few forests near the city (countable: specific forests).
Vi spiste laks til middag. / Vi fanget tre store lakser i elva.We ate salmon for dinner (food mass). / We caught three large salmons in the river (creatures).

3. Plural-Only Nouns and Paired Garments (bukse, brille)

Some nouns exist exclusively in the plural (pluralia tantum), while paired garments can be used in either singular or plural with identical meaning:

A. Nouns used solely in the plural:

Penger: Jeg har ikke nok penger til å kjøpe hus.Money: I do not have enough money to buy a house.
Klær: Vinterklærne mine henger i skapet.Clothes: My winter clothes are hanging in the closet.
Søsken: Har du noen søsken? (brødre eller søstre)Siblings: Do you have any siblings?

B. Dual items and clothing: Flexible singular or plural:

ei bukse / bukser: Jeg har på meg svart bukse i dag. = Jeg har på meg svarte bukser i dag.pants / trousers: I am wearing black pants today (singular or plural equally valid).
en brille / briller: Jeg finner ikke brillen min. = Jeg finner ikke brillene mine.glasses: I cannot find my glasses (singular or plural refer to one pair).
Remember quantifiers: Use 'mye / lite' for uncountable nouns (mye melk, lite tid), and 'mange / få' for countable plural nouns (mange bøker, få venner).
